Wie kann ein Haarschnitt mit einer so eigenwilligen und widersprüchlichen Geschichte bis heute nachwirken? Der Vokuhila hatte je nach Zeit und Ort ganz unterschiedliche Bedeutungen – als praktische Lösung, popkulturelles Symbol, Ausdruck queerer Identität oder auch als Zeichen konservativer Haltung. Mit diesen Porträts möchte Troia genau diese Spannung sichtbar machen und zeigen, wie ein so auffälliger Look viele Schichten an Bedeutung tragen kann.

In this photo book, Riccardo Troia portrays people in Switzerland who wear a mullet – seeking to understand what fascinates them about this hairstyle today.
How can a haircut with such an idiosyncratic and contradictory history still resonate today? Depending on time and place, the mullet has held very different meanings – as a practical solution, a pop-cultural symbol, an expression of queer identity, or even a sign of conservative values. With these portraits, Troia aims to make this tension visible and to show how such a striking look can carry many layers of meaning.
